9/11 and Oklahoma City Bombing
Today is 9/11. A day that will long be remembered in infamy by all of us. On this day 9 years ago radicals attacked New York City and killed over 3,000 American citizens. These people were mostly New Yorkers, and for today, all of New York mourns for the loss of it's brethren. This day reminds me of the 1995 Murrah Building bombing that happened in my hometown, Oklahoma City. This bombing was the first large and destructive terrorist attack in america, and it was done by a fellow american.
On April 19th 1995, Timothy McVeigh placed a truck in front of the Oklahoma City Murrah Bombing. The truck had a large bomb inside of it, and 5 minutes after parking the truck in front of the building, he lit the fuse, and the truck exploded.
The Murrah Building was a government building where a bank and federal places were located, and the bank there was the one my parents used at the time. Every week my mother went in there to handle our finances and other usual bank matters. A week before the bombing me and my mother (i was 1 at the time) went into the Murrah building to set my security check and number. She happened the choose to go with me to get my security stuff all set in that week, she could have done it the day when the bombing happened. Her and I could have died, but luck was with us, and we were granted to not be there on that day.
The bombing killed 168 people, and of those 168, 19 were children. There was a daycare in the Murrah Building, which makes this whole bombing even more tragic.
(best video i could find, its dramatic but has good information at the beginning)
Why I bring this up on 9/11? Because I feel this must be like how the majority of New Yorkers feel right now. My parents knew people in that building, and i'm sure a lot of those people knew me. This may be a sad time for all of America, but there's no way we can feel the pain as much as those citizens of New York feel. The people who died in 9/11 were friends and family members. These two terrorist attacks (OKC Bombing and 9/11) really show how a city and a nation can come together and act as a unit, as friends, and as brothers and sisters. No matter who you are or what you are, if something like this happens to a place where you live and to people you know, you become a part of an extended family where everyone cares about everyone else, because this was personal, and it makes you realize that even though the people may seem very apart, when the time comes, they can come together and help each other come to terms with what tragedy has occurred.
We will always remember the victims of 9/11.
and me and my fellow Oklahomans (hopefully some none oklahomans too) will remember the vicitims of the OKC Bombing.
